Planning: Editing

I had to plan the editing techniques that I will use in my music video so it will help me during the editing stages. In particular, when choosing editing ideas, I had to think about the thoughts of Goodwin who stated that 'editing should be in time with the pace of the song' and 'editing should match the lyrics.

Some of my editing choices:
What: a transition where I introduce my single title. This will look old school, almost like the Charlie Chaplin videos.
When: at the start of the music video
Why: suits the sounds of the music and allows us to use an intertexual reference.

What: fade to black
When: at the start of the video to introduce the artist and the various locations he is in
Why:  to show he has a strong presence in and around town. Some of these images will be of him alone, and some will be with friends.

What: A flash to white
When: During the middle of the video
Why: to show him reminiscing about the good times he has shared with his friend to create a nostalgic feel to the video

What: an overlay
When: when the artist is singing, and the overlay will show him also dancing in the background
Why: this will show the multi-talent of my artist so the audience will admire him and this will enhance his star image.

What: cross dissolve
When: throughout the video to show different narrative/performance from the artist
Why: this is because from my research into videos like Westlife's 'Smile' video I noticed they used a lot of these to make the visuals flow and change in a relaxed manner.

What: fade to black which are prolonged
When: towards the end of the video
Why: music slows down at the end and this will be emphasised with the pace of editing to end to a calm feeling note. It will create a sense of satisfaction to what the audience see.

This editing has been beneficial as it will save me time in the editing room if I have a general idea of what I want to portray.

Research and Planning - Digipak Analysis of Conventions

Analysis of Digipaks

Purpose: The intended purpose for a Digipak is to highlight the tracklist of the artist as well as help promote the album. It is used to create a relationship between the artist and the audience. If done well, the album can become a collectors item.

General Conventions:

-Tracklist
-Album Name
-Production Company
-Parental Advisory (if needed)
-Institution
-Artist Name
-Artist as Star Image

Analysis of Michael Buble Digipak

This analysis was done by Sean.

Analysis of Robbie Williams Digipak

This was done by Chloe.

Analysis of Frank Sinatra Digipak

This was done by Darhyl.

Common conventions within the Digipaks analysed were:

-black and white
-image as star
-masculine jazzy colours
-always in suits
-classic typography

From analysing the existing Digipaks I will now include:

-Dark classic colours to promote a jazzy feel
-Have our star dressed in smart attire i.e. a suit and tie.
-Include italic/olden typography to connote the outlook of the album
-Have the star image of on the front cover of the Digipak where his face is clearly shown in order for the audience to identify with him.

In conclusion, this work has been helpful because it has allowed my group and I to further understand what needs to go into a Digipak. We have also gathered knowledge on what is conventional for our Genre - Jazz.

Research and Planning: Advert Information

Advert Information

This post is a description of what will be included in the advert. The advert is used to highlight all the key information about the album and where it can be downloaded/purchased from.

The key singles on the album are:

-Tuesday Night
-Karma
-Atmosphere
-Dusty Memories
 Release Date: January 27th 2015

Where To Download:

The album 'Belong to the City' will be of availability on online music sites such as

-Spotify
-iTunes
-Amazon

The type of typography used for this advert will be a modern italic format, we want the font to be bold enough to stand out from the image so that it can be easily interpreted by the audience.

The name of the album will be 'Belong to the City'. This was chosen as it is an effective adjective used to describe the artist's connection to his beloved city and why he upholds it so high.

The album does not include explicit content which is why there will not be a label notifying the audience of this prior their purchase.

Main Image: This will be of the star to enhance his star image and make sure the audience know that this is his advert and album. However, there will be shots of the featuring artist too.

Colour Scheme: The colour scheme for this advert will include very masculine and olden colours such as: grey, white, black etc.

Conclusion

From this post I have learnt the fundamental factors that are to be included when producing an advert for an album. These are factors that I will later take into consideration when creating the advert. I now know how to appeal to the given audience in a conventional and professional manner.

Research and Planning: Digipak Information

Digipak Information

What is a Digipak?

A Digipak is an sleeve that is placed along with the release of an artists album. The purpose of the Digipak is to provide information on the artist for the benefit of the target audience. It also creates, adapts and feeds into the representation of the 'Star Image'. Having a Digipak will help to widen the audiences knowledge and understanding of the artist's album whilst also gaining an insight into the characteristics the star possess.

Research and Planning Advert: Drafts of Advert

Drafts of Advert
As a collective, my group and I had many theories for how we wanted our final advert to look. The drafting process has been beneficial to the group due to us being able to brainstorm ideas for how the advert could be most conventional and really reflect our music video. After many discussions, we created two drafts showcasing ideas and improvements for the final advert.

Draft 1:

What went well?
-image is good as artist is represented well, but do not duplicate images as this is used in the digipak.
-good colour scheme to the product which works well to the first draft of the digipak
-iconography selected well

Even better if?
-change some of the typography (too similar and not enough variety)
- key information missing that I need to include (release date)
-more download icons

Draft 2

What went well?
- image works well to enhance the star persona
-more relevant details added
-the design looks more consistent now
Even better if?
-need speechmarks around key singles
-think about the wording of your key singles
-layout needs a little work to integrate text and images more
-release date needs to be added

Overall our final advert will include all the improvements we discussed  in hope to create the best version of the final advert possible. In particular I will need to think about my layout and typography.

Question 3: What Have You Learnt From Your Audience Feedback?

Evaluation Question 3

What Have You Learnt From Your Audience Feedback?

Gaining audience feedback was vital when creating this production. Initially, it was important to establish who the audience was for the Neo-Soul/Jazz genre; I did this mainly from secondary research into existing videos. From this, I then had to carry out my own research activity to find out what they wanted in particular from my use of conventions, and video as a whole. In order to do this, I carried out my own questionnaire which gave me valuable feedback to learn and make choices from. Finally, once the production had been made, I carried out further research by holding a focus group in order to learn what my audience felt about my overall product.

From my secondary research, I established that the following demographic were the audience for the Neo-Soul/Jazz genre:

Target Audience:
Genre - Neo-Soul/Jazz
Age/s - 12 - 40
Gender - Unisex
Ethnicity - Interracial (All)
Occupation - C1, C2, D, E
Hobbies and Interests - Going out, partying, social smoking, music, having fun with friends at various locations of interest

Once I established the audience, I then carried out my own questionnaire. I gathered my 20 participants together in a room and played them the song so they had an idea of what questions/video idea they would be answering.  I did this for the following reasons:
-reliable data
-specific/targeted audience
-gather quick feedback
-could manipulate questions to find out areas of interest
-easy to create results from
-easy to make decisions from

Below is an image of my questionnaire:

1. Questionnaire

"other sheet could not be attached"

"Which setting would you most like to see a Jazz music video set in?"

-A run-down street  |   |
-A bar |   |
-Casino |   |
-Performance Hall |   |
-Studio |   |

*majority of people said a casino and a bar = therefore my location choice were of these two*

"What types of iconography would you expect to see within a Jazz music video?"

-Alcohol |   |
-Cigars |   |
-Playing Cards |   |
-Instruments |   |
-Microphones |   |
-Stages |   |

*majority vote suggested that the iconography I should use be alcohol, cigars and playing cards = this was my choice of iconography*

"If you could suggest a typical costume for a Jazz artist, what would it include?"

-Long trench coats/jackets |   |
-Black and White Suits |   |
- Top hats |   |

*majority suggested that the outfits the artist and other characters should wear should be trench coats and suits = I included this for my costume representation*

"In a typical music video such as "Follow" would you expect the interaction between characters to be relaxed and joyful or serious and dominant?

________________________________________________________________

*this answer brought me to the conclusion that the connection between characters should be very enjoyable and relaxed. This would appeal to the audience most = this was how I got my characters to interact *

"What would you suggest the essential lighting for a Jazz music video to be set in?

-High Key |   |
-Low Key |   |
-Natural Key |   |

*the essential lighting for my music video has been chosen to be natural to high key = I therefore include this to represent the mood of my video*

"Should we introduce other characters into the music video or keep it to the one friend?"

-Other characters? |   |
-Just the one friend? |   |

*this question allowed me to know that I should keep the characters to minimal and just use the one friend = some shots it was just the friend, but I did include some others for some variety*

"Should we increase the sex appeal within the star's persona or keep it moderately clean and collected?"

-Increase sex appeal |   |
-Keep it clean and collected |   |

*Due to the answer for this question I included some sex appeal in my music video, this helped to appeal thus attracting a female audience*

"Should the visuals compliment the lyrics or should we keep a simple concept to the video?"

-Compliment each other |   |
-Keep it to concept standard |   |

*from this question I came to the conclusion to use visuals creatively in a way that complimented the lyrics of the music video well*

I handed the questionnaire to 20 people who I know liked and knew about the Neo-Soul/Jazz genre in order to gather valuable and reliable feedback on my use of conventions. Below is the findings of what I learnt from my audience feedback.

This graph told me that I should upload my work onto YouTube as it was the most watched online site for music videos once the product was created so I could gather audience feedback to measure the success of my product.

This graph told me that I should make the style of my music video Concept Based and make it original for the audience. This feedback allowed me to decided that I would incorporate this idea in my music video, however I was still keen to also include performance, which I did.

From this graph I have gathered that there is in fact a target market for my music video. This is due to the results given displaying that there is a lot of people watching music videos within a 7 day week

From this graph it allowed me to know that the best iconography for my music video would be alcohol, cigars and playing cards

From this graph it allowed me to chose the outfit for my music video to be long trench coats/jackets with a black and white suits

From this graph I was able to suggest that the essential lighting for my jazz music video should be set in natural to low key lighting

This graph told me that there was valuable feedback coming as a result of my questionnaire which is due to a majority of the participants watching "10 or more" videos in a 7 day week. This allowed me to learn that I should take their feedback seriously and use it to make key decisions from.

Other ideas that I learned/gathered from the questionnaire as a result of majority choices:

-That I should style my artist with a conventional black and white suit.
-The artists clothing representation should be cool and urban as well as classic. The biggest choice was to dress him in a hat and unbutton his shirt. This is something I used within my production.
-I should include locations like a casino setting
-My video should be black and white
-friendship and having fun should be a key theme to portray
-iconography like cigars and alcohol should be used.

This questionnaire gave me audience feedback and intelligence on what would be conventional for my specific genre. With this feedback, I was able to tailor my media product to suit the target audiences expectations as well as being specific to the genre. This allowed me to include these themes and help make my media product visually appealing plus effective, achieving success.

I also asked numerous open ended questions in my questionnaire to get more detailed answers from my audience.

Feedback Given

1) Name 5 artists (old artists or modern artists) that you know represent/or have represented the Jazz genre well?

Crystal Vega, aged 16 said; "Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Justin Timberlake, Chris Brown and Michael Buble'.

I learned from this as it was a good combination of older and more modern artist so I could base a deeper analysis of this artists to help with artist representation and convention choices.

2) What feelings do you expect to feel when you watch a video of the Jazz genre?

Ken Lee, aged 18 said; "I like to feel chilled. I like to see the artist leading an entertaining lifestyle and singing and performing with confidence to I can sit back and relax whist watching it. As they are 'cool men' I want to almost envy their lifestyle".

I learned from this because it helped me to decide that I should create a very relaxed and settled tone within my music video which would allow my audience to feel absorbed within the video contents. The second bit to his answer allowed me to make the choice of including performance in the video too where he sings and dances in a laid-back manner to the camera.

3) Do you agree that modern day music videos portray males in a 'sexual gaze' as well as women? Please comment on why.

Khaled Jaffer, aged 17 said; "Yes I definitely agree, especially modern day music videos where you see men topless and stuff. It is important to sell through sex appeal because sex sells!"

I learned from this feedback as it was common feedback that I received from the question on other forms that modern day music videos do try and make their artist appeal to the opposite/same sex. This helped me decide that I would make my artist have charisma by doing things like flirting with the camera, unbuttoning his shirt etc.

POST-PRODUCTION AUDIENCE FEEDBACK:

As a group we decided that we would share our work on popular media platforms in order to receive audience feedback after the production was created. This allowed us to measure the success of our production and identify any areas of improvement.

Follow - Sean Dela Rose - Mos Wanted Productions:
(YOUTUBE)

-Why did you put your work on YouTube?

I put our work on YouTube due to it being a worldwide source for video streaming. YouTube has been deemed the world's largest online site to watch and listen to  music videos. It is a clear and unrestricted site.

2 positive comments:

2 critiques:

"The ending seemed very unfinished, perhaps it could have been more of an established finish next time"

"I felt that there should of been more shots of the artist alone, than with the partner, a bigger star appeal could of been formed from this.

What did you learn from this audience feedback in terms of whether you created a conventional and successful music video?

From this audience feedback I learnt that I did create a conventional and successful music video based on my ability to make the concept understandable and not lose the audiences attention and expectations. I was also successful in portraying the relationship between music and visuals which was one of the main conventions to follow. On the whole, the feedback was positive which makes me learn from my audience feedback that I created a successful product.

Focus group pictures and feedback:

I have learnt from this feedback that I could have explored more with my locations and maybe the casino idea was used too often. We did have lots of other shots we could have picked from so this is something I have to consider in the future to ensure there is enough variety in my product.

What I learnt from this feedback is that the friendship portrayed in the video is very effective and believable, and if there was one thing to improve, it was the star at the end who did one thing with his drink that didn't look believable. Something like this is easily fixed so I am happy with this feedback.

Although the feedback was positive in regards to the themes portrayed and the friendship/interaction portrayed within the video, again, the variety of locations has come up as an area to improve. This is important to know because although I think they were good, more settings should have been added.

Benji really liked our use of locations, in particular the piano and casino as it reflected the genre well. Jordan liked the engagement with the characters and the costumes worn by them which is good as this was a decision from audience feedback. Saffy liked the style and tone that was lazy as it is expected from the genre.

What did you learn from this audience feedback in terms of whether you created a conventional and successful music video?

From this audience feedback I learnt that I created a music video that portrayed the genre and its conventions in an effective way. The artist representation along with my choices of iconography and setting were big hits amongst the audience and I believe this is because we made them believable and realistic to expectations. The one area that needs the most improvement is using more locations for even more variety.

Conclusion

For my music video 'Follow', I ensured that we promoted the video over various media platforms. This was so that the feedback we would eventually gain on our product would be liable enough for us to determine whether it was conventional or not. It was also so that we could meet the expectations of the audience.

The feedback on my music video was overall very positive, however there is always room for improvement. As the director and producer of this music video I found this feedback to be beneficial to myself as I would able to clearly identify the audiences likes and dislikes. After reading all the feedback I went back and watched the music video again, and to be honest, I could clearly see where a majority of viewers were coming with their comments. Perhaps a more focused ending would have been more satisfying for the audience.

Overall, I am very pleased with my music video and the feedback; should I ever create another music video, will be taken into consideration and put into action. I would take my time in perfecting the elements needed to create a professional music video for my audience to enjoy.

Question 4: How Did You Use Media Technologies In The Construction And Research, Planning And Evaluation Stages?

QUESTIONNAIRE & GRAPHS

QUESTIONNAIRE

Introduction

Within my group it was our duty to develop an idea for the music video, we also carried out some research into each idea, genre and potential audience. To find accurate results we decided to create a questionnaire with questions that are tailored to finding out target audience expectations and desires of our video idea.

Questionnaire

I handed my questionnaire to 20 people of mixed gender who liked the Neo-Soul/Jazz genre of music. This is because they are best suited to giving me potential ideas of conventions and narrative so they would be the perfect demographic for my music video ideas. The 20 people will age vary from 15-25 due to what concept the video follows it will again be best suited and most relate able to this age group.

*second sheet could not be attached*

"Which setting would you most like to see a Jazz music video set in?"

-A run-down street  |   |
-A bar |   |
-Casino |   |
-Performance Hall |   |
-Studio |   |

The majority vote was a casino and studio so I will look to include these in my video.

"What types of iconography would you expect to see within a Jazz music video?"

-Alcohol |   |
-Cigars |   |
-Playing Cards |   |
-Instruments |   |
-Microphones |   |
-Stages |   |

The audience could pick 2 of their preferred ideas. Cigars, alcohol and playing cards were the top choice so if we create the Jazz video, I will use these to reflect the genre.

"If you could suggest a typical costume for a Jazz artist, what would it include?"

-Long trench coats/jackets |   |
-Black and White Suits |   |
- Top hats |   |

The majority vote was the black and white suits and long trech coats so my artist will wear these. This is good as this was also my preferred choice to include both as it reflects the genre well.

"In a typical music video such as "Follow" would you expect the interaction between characters to be relaxed and joyful or serious and dominant?

________________________________________________________________

Most people chose relaxed and joyful so this is how my characters will behave.

"What would you suggest the essential lighting for a Jazz music video to be set in?

-High Key |   |
-Low Key |   |
-Natural Key |   |

Most people said natural and high key so I will do this to glamourise the star appeal.

"Should we introduce other characters into the music video or keep it to the one friend?"

-Other characters? |   |
-Just the one friend? |   |

Most people said other characters and I feel this is important to do so also to show his cool persona.

"Should we increase the sex appeal within the star's persona or keep it moderately clean and collected?"

-Increase sex appeal |   |
-Keep it clean and collected |   |

Majority vote was increase sex appeal so I will do that, but have to think closely about how I will illustrate this idea.

"Should the visuals compliment the lyrics or should we keep a simple concept to the video?"

-Compliment each other |   |
-Keep it to concept standard |   |

This was a 50/50 split vote so I will include both ideas and this will be good to increase variety in my video idea.

GRAPHS

From this graph I have gathered that there is in fact a target market for my music video. This is due to the results given displaying that there is a lot of people watching music videos within a 7 day week.

From this graph I have gathered that it would be best to post my music video on YouTube as it is clearly the most used online site for watching music videos.

From this graph I have discovered that It would be best to make my music video concept based.

From this graph it allowed me to know that the best iconography for my music video would be alcohol, cigars and playing cards

From this graph it allowed me to chose the outfit for my music video to be long trench coats/jackets with a black and white suits

From this graph I was able to suggest that the essential lighting for my jazz music video should be set in natural to high key lighting

Conclusion

Creating this questionnaire has been beneficial to my planning because it has allowed me to locate the target audience that my music video will be perfect for. This will increase the chances of success and good ratings for my video.
I will feedback to my group my results in the form of a graph so it is easy to interpret and understand.

Question 1: In What Ways Does Your Media Product Use, Develop Or Challenge Forms And Conventions Of Real Media Products?

Friday 9 January 2015

Planning - Creative Brief For Digipak

Creative Brief For Digipak

Release Date: 17th January 2015    Album Title: Belong to the City.

Project Managers: Darhyl Matias, Chloe Boylan, Sean Mutiso
Product Overview:

Who are they?

Sean De La Rose is originally from North London, and is releasing his debut album. The music video for ‘Follow’ will be released on the 17th January 2015 at the same time as his album will be released “Belong to the City”.

What is the concept?

We need to have the Digipak looking very simple, yet eye catching with a simple background but a title that stands out. This is so that the audience will remember the title easily because Sean De La Rose will need as many new fans as possible with it being a debut. He is a modern artist who plays tribute to old styles of music like Jazz and Swing, but is influenced by modern day artists like Justin Timberlake and Chris Brown.

Why are we doing it?

This has to be a memorable cover simply because we want to get as many people to notice Sean De La Rose as possible in order to create a new and long lasting fan base. He will wear smart, but fashionable clothing in order to try and create a relationship with the audience before even actually listening to the music because the public tend to be quite looks orientated so his looks have to be relatable and identifiable.
Comparable Products?
Artists such as Justin Timberlake, Chris Brown and Frank Sinatra are all artists that we would like to follow in the footsteps of. They attract all their fans by allowing the audience to have a strong relationship with them due to interests and hobbies, clothing and simple Digipak designs that people will remember.

The Digipak:

Consumer:
Primary:
Male: 45% Aged 12 - 45
Secondary:
Female: 65% Aged 12 - 45

What is the reaction we want?

What we want is a positive reaction to the album due to our target audience mainly being teenagers and young adults as our consumer being able to related to our brand and artist. With this positive reaction from the mainstream and diverse audience, they will create a relationship between the artist and the consumer. AS for doing this it allows for the people to share similar view and beliefs with each others.

How Will We Know It Worked?

It would have worked by the product gaining a positive reaction from the consumers when released, this will be known by us breaking even on the sales target and definitely if we break the target. Furthermore with the first draft there will be a focus group being created so that we can gain some audience feedback from the fans he already has, with doing this it allows us to improve what we did wrong at first.

Key launch Dates:
Press Campaign:  11th December 2014
Album Release: 27th January 2015

Album Sleeve

Description: To produce a friendly, relating Digipak with the group showing their personality and characteristics to appeal to the target audience making them want to have a connection with the artist and feel what he feels.

Deadlines 27th January 2015

Objective: To present and produce an album that relates to our target audience with night life, emotional connection, fashion sense etc. Helping the audience be able to enjoy life more.

Proposition: To appeal to a wider target audience that is still within the Jazz/Swing genre, as this will help build the Jazz artist who originates from a slightly niche genre, leading into more success.

Tone Of Voice/Brand Image/Positioning: To aim for our target audience and make them relate to the lyrics, genre and themes of the song.

Restrictions/Limitations: The only restriction is to provide the album and artist name, album image, the release date, the album title, information about the album, where it is available to purchase and record label.

Production Specs: 1 CD with a plastic case.
Creative Edge Spectrum: We want the Digipak to be similar to the advert in terms of consistency and style but be more creative with it, to show to the consumers what the artist is really about.
Budget: TBC

Research and Planning - Drafts of Digipak

Drafts Of Digipak

Drafting was important to ensure that I was using the best conventions for my digipak product. Each time I did it, I got feedback from my peers who liked and knew about the genre in order to gain valuable next step ideas. During the drafting process, my digipak designs definitely got better and better to help me create a product that would compliment the rest of my campaign.

Draft 1

What went well?

-the artist representation is good and it is relevant to the genre. The attire of his works well.
-good consistency amongst the panels. This is largely due to my choice of images and use of colour and lighting.
-there is a clear overall 'look' to the campaign.

Even better if?

-there is a bit of an artist overload that I need to work on
-following from my point before, I should consider the arrangement of my pictures.
-there is some key information about the production company missing

How Can This Be Improved?

I need to finalise the images that I will use on each panel. I should ensure that I do not include too many images of the artist as this can be perceived as too arrogant by him and he might lose his appeal.

Draft 2

What went well?

-good consistency again amongst all products again
-image choices looks a lot better now as there is a balance of images
-the overall look to the campaign is much better
-production details added

Even better if?

-typography for track list should be more consistent
-typography of the spine needs changing
-enhance stars name on the front, centre better
-make inside image fit the whole panel

What Can Be Improved?

I need to consider the consistency of my typography and change the spine as it looks basic.

Conclusion

To conclude, this process has been beneficial because I know that I have to  make the typography consistent throughout the product. Also, the name of the artist needs to look better for my final digipak.

Research and Planning - Analysing Advert

Advert Conventions

Purpose:

The main purpose of an advert is to inform people on a new product that is being introduced into the market. An advert attempts to persuade people to buy into these products.

Conventions of an Advert:

-Graphics
-Limited Use Of Words
-Colour Scheme
-Artist Name/Title
-Release/Tour Dates
-Album Release Date

Analysis Of Two Similar Adverts

'Drake - Club Paradise Tour Advert Cover'

In this advert cover we are shown an image of the artist sitting down on which looks like a rich fabricated sofa. This is used to show the graphics and image of the artist, this will help to attract Drake's audience as they will immediately be drawn to his specific facial features. The artist name and tour title are also located at the top in a larger font which will help attract eye attention for his fans to know that he is trying to advertise his 'Club Paradise Tour'. It is written a bold font which can connote the characteristics of Drake to be very confident and assertive to get himself popular. The colour schemes are colours such as gold, brown and black.
These colours connote a rich, lavish outlook on the advert which can also be used to represent the artists lifestyle and wealth. Additional artists are shown below the image of the artist to not draw the attention away from the main act which is himself and also key dates and information are placed at the bottom so that fans will know where to purchase their tour tickets.

What I will include:

-Album title
-Artist Name
-Conventional typography
-Use of dark and grey scale type colours to relate to similar artists
-Urban locations that connote jazz type outlooks i.e. graffiti walls, docks etc.
-Key singles on the album
-Tour dates
-Downloadable content links
-Official website

Conclusion

In conclusion, I will use the conventions when creating an advert for my artist as I now the powerful implications in can have on my artist such as: colour schemes, graphics, limited texts, release/tour dates etc. This will help to gain my artist the recognition from their fans as well as other future fans. My artist will be able to organise tour dates and also release their up and coming album 'Belong To The City'. I will use low key colours in my advert as I feel they help to describe and illustrate my artists' persona in an effective and cool way. I will make sure to include additional information so that location by fans will be easy.
