Planning: Editing

I had to plan the editing techniques that I will use in my music video so it will help me during the editing stages. In particular, when choosing editing ideas, I had to think about the thoughts of Goodwin who stated that 'editing should be in time with the pace of the song' and 'editing should match the lyrics.

Some of my editing choices:
What: a transition where I introduce my single title. This will look old school, almost like the Charlie Chaplin videos.
When: at the start of the music video
Why: suits the sounds of the music and allows us to use an intertexual reference.

What: fade to black
When: at the start of the video to introduce the artist and the various locations he is in
Why:  to show he has a strong presence in and around town. Some of these images will be of him alone, and some will be with friends.

What: A flash to white
When: During the middle of the video
Why: to show him reminiscing about the good times he has shared with his friend to create a nostalgic feel to the video

What: an overlay
When: when the artist is singing, and the overlay will show him also dancing in the background
Why: this will show the multi-talent of my artist so the audience will admire him and this will enhance his star image.

What: cross dissolve
When: throughout the video to show different narrative/performance from the artist
Why: this is because from my research into videos like Westlife's 'Smile' video I noticed they used a lot of these to make the visuals flow and change in a relaxed manner.

What: fade to black which are prolonged
When: towards the end of the video
Why: music slows down at the end and this will be emphasised with the pace of editing to end to a calm feeling note. It will create a sense of satisfaction to what the audience see.

This editing has been beneficial as it will save me time in the editing room if I have a general idea of what I want to portray.

Research and Planning - Digipak Analysis of Conventions

Analysis of Digipaks

Purpose: The intended purpose for a Digipak is to highlight the tracklist of the artist as well as help promote the album. It is used to create a relationship between the artist and the audience. If done well, the album can become a collectors item.

General Conventions:

-Tracklist
-Album Name
-Production Company
-Parental Advisory (if needed)
-Institution
-Artist Name
-Artist as Star Image

Analysis of Michael Buble Digipak

This analysis was done by Sean.

Analysis of Robbie Williams Digipak

This was done by Chloe.

Analysis of Frank Sinatra Digipak

This was done by Darhyl.

Common conventions within the Digipaks analysed were:

-black and white
-image as star
-masculine jazzy colours
-always in suits
-classic typography

From analysing the existing Digipaks I will now include:

-Dark classic colours to promote a jazzy feel
-Have our star dressed in smart attire i.e. a suit and tie.
-Include italic/olden typography to connote the outlook of the album
-Have the star image of on the front cover of the Digipak where his face is clearly shown in order for the audience to identify with him.

In conclusion, this work has been helpful because it has allowed my group and I to further understand what needs to go into a Digipak. We have also gathered knowledge on what is conventional for our Genre - Jazz.

Research and Planning: Advert Information

Advert Information

This post is a description of what will be included in the advert. The advert is used to highlight all the key information about the album and where it can be downloaded/purchased from.

The key singles on the album are:

-Tuesday Night
-Karma
-Atmosphere
-Dusty Memories
 Release Date: January 27th 2015

Where To Download:

The album 'Belong to the City' will be of availability on online music sites such as

-Spotify
-iTunes
-Amazon

The type of typography used for this advert will be a modern italic format, we want the font to be bold enough to stand out from the image so that it can be easily interpreted by the audience.

The name of the album will be 'Belong to the City'. This was chosen as it is an effective adjective used to describe the artist's connection to his beloved city and why he upholds it so high.

The album does not include explicit content which is why there will not be a label notifying the audience of this prior their purchase.

Main Image: This will be of the star to enhance his star image and make sure the audience know that this is his advert and album. However, there will be shots of the featuring artist too.

Colour Scheme: The colour scheme for this advert will include very masculine and olden colours such as: grey, white, black etc.

Conclusion

From this post I have learnt the fundamental factors that are to be included when producing an advert for an album. These are factors that I will later take into consideration when creating the advert. I now know how to appeal to the given audience in a conventional and professional manner.

What is a Digipak?

It also creates, adapts and feeds into the representation of the 'Star Image'. Research and Planning Advert: Drafts of Advert

Drafts of Advert
As a collective, my group and I had many theories for how we wanted our final advert to look. The drafting process has been beneficial to the group due to us being able to brainstorm ideas for how the advert could be most conventional and really reflect our music video. After many discussions, we created two drafts showcasing ideas and improvements for the final advert.

Draft 1:

What went well?
-image is good as artist is represented well, but do not duplicate images as this is used in the digipak.
-good colour scheme to the product which works well to the first draft of the digipak
-iconography selected well

Even better if?
-change some of the typography (too similar and not enough variety)
- key information missing that I need to include (release date)
-more download icons

Draft 2

What went well?
- image works well to enhance the star persona
-more relevant details added
-the design looks more consistent now
Even better if?
-need speechmarks around key singles
-think about the wording of your key singles
-layout needs a little work to integrate text and images more
-release date needs to be added

Overall our final advert will include all the improvements we discussed  in hope to create the best version of the final advert possible. In particular I will need to think about my layout and typography.
