Research: Genre's Of Music

Genre's Of Music
*images included after*
Introduction:
Within the heavily populated music industry, each music video has it's own genre characteristics. These can be easily identified by the style of the video e.g. the cinematography and mise en scene used. Music videos cater to all genre's due to the diverse audience/listeners we have, this means that there is always something for everyone.

Examples of Genre's:

Dancehall
House
R&B
Hip Hop
Gangster Rap
Country
Folk
Jazz
Folk
Musical
Rock
Latin
Scar
Techno
March
Afrobeats
Garage
Grime
World
New Age
Gospel
Disco
Chill Out
Classical
Nursery Rhymes
Pop
Punk

What is it about the different music videos that allows you to identify the genre?

Each music video has it's own genre characteristics. For example, an r&b video would include alcohol, clubs and attractive women. These characteristics are easily identified by the style of the video, and it is due to our diverse audience that we have such a wide range of genre's to choose from. Everyone is catered for.

Pop music:
Easy to identify as there are usually colourful images, happy images like singing and dancing and the majority of performers are young and attractive. Editing fits in time with the beat and nothing too controversial shown in terms of themes.

Rap:
The costumes, artists and images give away this genre. Usually male dominated with females shown in a sexual way. Also, lots of casual urban clothing work which helps define the artist attitudes and lifestyle.

Jazz:
There are usually male artists who wear black and white suits in this genre. They are usually cool and relaxed that reflects the genre well. Images are soft and not controversial. Usually lads having fun together. Soft focus used and smooth editing.

Club/Dance:
Usually set in locations like clubs or beaches. There is a mixture of gender in the videos and they are usually dancing and having fun with each other. CHaracters are also very young and attractive. Lots of bright colours and fast editing in these videos.

Rock:
The Rock genre is usually low-key and dark to reflect the tone and mood of the themes that the genre addresses. The artists are usually male and also wear dark clothing. The themes in the video might be aggressive and controversial.

Conclusion

In conclusion researching into this topic has bettered my understanding of the types of genre's present within music and also the characteristics that follow them. I have also learnt how to identify genre's within music videos and also understood why it is important to follow conventions in videos, based on the audience and/or the industry's expectations.

  1. Sean, I am glad you discuss why there are so many different genres in the music industry, but this post needs to show your understanding of these genres.

    To improve;
-where you have listed a lot of different genres, state the generic conventions of each
    -what genres are mainstream?
    -what genre are niche?
    -conclude?
