Research: Intertextuality

Interextuality

What Is Interextuality?

The term Intertextuality refers to the process of creating references to any kind of media text via another media text. In other words Intertextuality essentially means for a type of media (film, television, music etc) to pay homage to another media text.

The intertextuality of a video can be determined by the way it has be styled. For example, a parody.

It is very common that so many music videos draw upon their ideas from cinema due to the fact that most directors who style these music videos are often film school graduates looking to progress into the film industry their selves.

Our theorist Andrew Goodwin's views on this were that intertextual references are linked to films, TV programs and other parodying styled media etc.

Examples of Interextuality within music videos:

1. Within this music video we are shown a parody version to the worldwide phenomenon Kanye West's 'Bound 2', starring James Franco & Seth Rogen. It is clearly evident this is a parody due to the Setting being very similar, if not the same as the actual video, being on a motorbike with an edited background. Also, playing on the idea of Kanye having his wife Kim Kardashian West laying in front of him whilst on the bike, Seth also has James Franco playing the character of Kim which is used to mock and generate laughter from.

2. Within this music video we are shown Chris Brown's tribute to the renown 'King of Pop' Michael Jackson. In this video the mise en scene of chris's outfit is a straight correlation to Michael's jacket in the Thriller video. Lastly, as well as creating the same setting as a Michael Jackson video to help improve the reference to the artist, chris brown further adopts the movement and style of dance known by Michael Jackson throughout the peformance to help connote the intertextuality.

3. Within this final music video we are again shown a parody of Beyonce's music video 'Drunk In Love'. In this video it is clear it was created for a humorous purpose. This is based on the setting being the same but instead of beyonce walking across the beach we have this clearly masculine male playing her role instead as he sings about his love for Dunkin' Doughnuts, a doughnut franchise situated in America. This is again used to mock the actual music video and allow viewers to see this song from a different and more hilarious perspective.

Advantages of intertextuality

- Entertaining towards the viewers
- Attract more fan based
- Make more profit
- Build relationships with the audience
- Expand the artist's profile

Disadvantages of intertextuality

- Might not appeal towards the audience
- Unsure of the viewer's reaction
- Lose fan
- Relationship is being created
- Damage artist's reputation

Conclusion

From analysing Intertextuality i have gained a further understanding in this particular topic. I will attempt to use intertextuality in my video but if it becomes a challenge and difficult to pull of effectively I will not.

1 comment:

  1. Intertextual references are discussed well with advantages and disadvantages identified well. Chris Brown example is good.

    To improve;
-remember a parody isn't quite an intertextual reference, they are deliberately making fun out of an idea. An intertextual reference is a lot more subtle
